Why hip protection
Do hip protectors work?
Hip protectors have been studied for decades. Here’s what the research actually shows, and what it doesn’t.
Hip protectors only work when worn. Ours live inside the gear you already put on.
Why compliance matters
- Decades of clinical research A Cochrane systematic review found wearing a hip protector at the time of a fall reduces hip-fracture risk.
- 64% less impact force in lab testing Drop-tower testing of the Phoenix Shield with impctLAB and Carbon.
- DPT recommended Physical therapists and bone-health educators recommend Phoenix Hipwear to their patients.
What the clinical research tells us
A major review of clinical studies, published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, one of the most respected sources of medical evidence, found that wearing a hip protector at the time of a fall reduces the risk of hip fracture.
That’s not a marketing claim. It’s the conclusion of researchers who analyzed multiple independent trials involving thousands of older adults.
What this means for you
It doesn’t mean every fall ends without injury. What it means is that if you fall while wearing Phoenix Hipwear, you are more likely to get back up and keep going.
For an active woman with osteoporosis or low bone density, that difference can be the difference between a setback and a life-changing event. A hip fracture is the number one reason active women lose their independence. Not because of the fall itself, but because of what follows: surgery, months of rehabilitation, and for many women a permanent reduction in mobility and confidence.
Wearing a hip protector during the activities that carry the highest fall risk (hiking, pickleball, cycling, skiing, yoga, even walking on uneven ground) means you have a meaningful layer of protection precisely when you need it most.
Why wearing it matters as much as owning it
The research also reveals something important: hip protectors only work when worn. Some earlier studies showed lower rates of effectiveness, and when researchers looked closely at why, poor compliance was consistently the answer. People had the protector. They just weren’t wearing it at the time of the fall.
This is where Phoenix Hipwear is different. We designed one for active women who want protection during the specific moments when fall risk is real: out on the trail, on the pickleball court, on the ski slope. Because our shields sit inside athletic shorts or underwear that you’d wear anyway during those activities, compliance isn’t a battle. You put on your gear, and protection comes with it.
Our own biomechanical testing
We didn’t just rely on existing research. We partnered with impctLAB and Carbon, specialists in impact protection engineering, to independently test the Phoenix Shield.
Using a drop-tower test that simulates the force of a real fall, our shields demonstrated a 64% reduction in impact force in lab testing. That’s engineering proof layered on top of clinical evidence: two independent lines of confirmation that this technology does what it’s designed to do.
